Three endocrine disruptors, three different immune system responses

A study involving members of TecnATox has analyzed how three endocrine disruptors -BPA, PFOA, and TDCPP- affect macrophages, cells that form part of the immune system's first line of defense.

The results show that each compound produces different effects:

  • TDCPP: is the most toxic of the three. It reduces macrophage viability and decreases some of their immune responses, which could indicate an immunosuppressive effect.
  • PFOA: activates some defense mechanisms, but without generating a complete immune response in the parameters studied.
  • BPA: has a much more limited impact and does not cause significant changes in viability or in the main immune response mechanisms analyzed.

The research, published in Environment International, highlights that substances belonging to the same group of contaminants can have very different effects on the immune system. The researchers consider it necessary to continue studying these effects to better understand the risks associated with exposure to these compounds and improve their assessment.

The study is part of the European PARC project, which focuses on assessing the risks posed by chemical substances in order to protect human health and the environment.
