The projects of Begoña Muguerza and Eduard Llobet stand out among the URV’s R2B 2025 grants for promoting research-based entrepreneurship

The URV Foundation, in collaboration with the Social Council and the Vice-Rectorate for Knowledge Valorization, Transfer and Employability, has awarded the R2B 2025 (Research to Business) grants to four entrepreneurship projects from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) linked to the fields of health and food. Each initiative will receive €10,000 to support its transformation into a business project and facilitate its entry into the market.

Among the selected projects, two are led by researchers from TecnATox. The first, headed by Begoña Muguerza from the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, aims to create a spin-off to commercialize hydrolysates and innovative functional ingredients for the food, veterinary, and cosmetic sectors. The project builds on the research of URV's Nutrigenomics Group, which has a long track record in knowledge transfer with companies, and seeks to optimize market analysis, financial planning, and the attraction of investors and clients.

The second project, led by Eduard Llobet from the Department of Electronic, Electrical, and Automatic Engineering, is developing EMAI - a non-invasive device designed to detect outbreaks of viral epidemic infections using a predictive model based on artificial intelligence. The system, validated during the second wave of the pandemic with 519 patients, achieved a 97% sensitivity rate in detecting COVID-19 risk. The current phase focuses on designing prototypes - hand sanitiser dispensers with a QR code linked to a symptom questionnaire - and developing a market study and business plan to facilitate technology transfer.

Through this call, the URV strengthens its commitment to knowledge transfer and innovation as key drivers for generating social and economic impact in the region.
